Sonoff Basic

The sonoff basic is a brilliant device for adding the ability to turn devices on an off in a smart home. It acts as an in-line switch which connects via WiFi. The switch is then controlled via the ewelink app which can be used with alexa as well. As these are WiFi devices they have a very quick response time to on and off commands which is great where speed is a priority. I use these quite a lot in my smart home for this reason. When paired with a motion sensor you can switch on lights in a split second. I use these in the downstairs toilet to switch on the lights as the door is opened the light then stays on for 10 minutes then turns off if no motion is detected. Perfect for improved hygiene.
The sonoff basic can easily be wired into an extension lead and used without the need to modify the device directly as well. This works great for sockets that are on show in your house that you may not want bulky smart socket adapters sticking out of. Just plug in a extension lead with the so of basic wires to a point on the lead that's hidden and you are good to go.
The sonoff basic also works with IFTTT to allow for cross platform actions and is also able to be flashed with different firmware like tasmota to give extra functionality and integrations in to smart platforms like home assistant.
There is also a sonoff basic r3 now which allows you to use the switch with DIY mode. More on this in future posts.
