streaming Services

Media streaming services are internet based providers of a variety of media types. There are providers for music as well as video content. This section deals with video content and the services that we have used. Streaming services can be seen as a replacement for standard TV options such as SkyDigial or an accompaniment, however between the costs of tv licencing, a SkyDigiatal subscription and streaming services, monthly costs can be rather high.

In recent years more and more people have been “cutting the cord” and moving away from live tv broadcasts and choosing to only use streamed media. The market is becoming more competative with services that provide video content and all ask for a monthly or annual fee to use them. If you are considering using these services, it’s a good idea to use a free trial for each one first and browse the content. Content varies between providers and you may find that one has more content that is of interest to you than another.

Disney+

Disney+ is the youngest of all the streaming services listed here however as it is provided by Disney it has a plethora of content. Disney own Pixar, Marvel films, LucusArts and National Geographic. This means that content is not only provided by Disney but also by the other companies that it owns. This makes it the steaming service of choice for many.

Before Disney+ was released, Disney begun to remove its content from other platforms so that it could be the sole provider of Disney owned media. This means that you won’t find disney, Marvel Pixar, Star Wars or NatGeo content in any other streaming services.

Disney + can be streamed on up to 10 devices at a time.

NetFlix

NetFlix is one of the original online video streaming services and tends to be the service that most people think of when talking about steaming services. The content for the service is good and there are a large number of NetFlix original series that aren’t available on any other service.

Netflix also provides documentaries and anime series that can be streamed to any enabled device. Netflix allows for 5 connected devices and 1 active stream at a time with their standard package. this is increased with the family package.

NowTV

NowTV is Sky’s streaming service and a slightly different streaming service as it provides packages that are aimed towards a particular audience rather than providing the entire library at one cost. The entertainment pack is the standard TV pack and provides access to tv shows that are aired on channels such as SkyOne, SkyAtlantic, SkyDocumentories, SkyHistory, The Discovery Channel, Fox and more. NowTV is a great alternative to SkyDigital as all the media is provided over an internet connection on demand and many of the most popular TV shows can be watched using it.

Other packages include the Cinema Pass, Kids Pass, Sport Pass and Hayu Pass. The Cinema Pass provides on demand access to all the films that are currently available on Sky’s movie channels. The Kids Pass provides access to content from channels such as Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and Nickelodeon. The Sports pass gives access to live sports and the pass can be setup to be used as a day pass for a particular sports event or a monthly pass. The Hayu Pass is used to access all Sky’s reality TV content.

Each pass differs in cost with the monthly sports pass being the most expensive. We currently only use the Entertainment pass with is around £10.00 a month.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is provided as part of the Amazon Prime package. This service is unique in that the service is provided along with Amazon Music and Amazon Prime Delivery at a single monthly cost. If you do not want the entire Prime range then Video can be purchased separately for a slightly cheaper price than all the services together.

The content provided on Amazon Prime Video is satisfactory and has a good number of exclusive shows such as The Grand Tour, The Man in The High Castle, Picard and The Expanse. Amazon Prime Video has received some bad reviews due to its lack of popular content. However as this service can be used at no extra cost if you are already a Prime member then this can essentially be seen as free content and in recent years the content has really improved and is now one of the better services out there.

Amazon have also recently signed a contract to provide the streaming service for the Premier League and US Open.
