Touch Panel Wall Controler
Using your voice to control your smart home is not always the most convenient. Think about when others are sleep or you have guests you are entertaining in a loud ebvironment. Some times hitting a button or tapping a screen is the simplest way to do things. I made this wall mounted touch panel using a 7" Amazon Fire Tablet running an app called Fully Kiosk Browser. The browser is locked to the url of my own internally hosted website that pulls all my smart home devices into one place. This let's me control my Energenie light switches and sockets, sonoff switches, ikea tradfri, and smartthings devices all from one simple interface. The screen you can see in the image above allows me to adjust my Energenie thermostats and radiator valves using API calls with just a tap of the screen. Doing this means that I don't have to switch between several apps to control different devices. You could also use Home Assistant for this but I decided to go for my own bespoke interface. Having this as a website means that I can also access the site from my smart phone, tablets, or computers around the house, not just the wall mounted tablet. The frame is made from wooden edging from B&Q. This edging was wide enough to cover the charging port and cable. The power cable for the tablet runs down the wall cavity to the double socket with USB ports below. I made this one as a prototype to see how it would work and look and it works brilliantly for what I need it to do. Just waiting for Prime Day now to buy a few more tablets to build a few more of these for other areas of the house.
