Adding the SMLIGHT Integration to Home Assistant and Adding Zigbee Devices
This guide will walk you through the steps to add the SMLIGHT integration into Home Assistant, which automatically configures ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) in the background. This integration only became available in the 09.2024 update of Home assistant so if you are on an earlier version this will need to be upgraded first. Once the integration setup is complete, you can pair Zigbee devices directly through the SMLIGHT Coordinator device page. In this example, we’ll pair a Sonoff Water Valve.
Prerequisites
A running instance of Home Assistant.
An SMLIGHT Zigbee Coordinator (e.g., SMLIGHT SLZB-06).
A Zigbee device to pair.
Step 1: Accessing Home Assistant
Open your web browser and log into your Home Assistant instance.
Step 2: Adding the SMLIGHT Integration
In the Home Assistant dashboard, click Settings from the sidebar on the left.
Select Devices & Services from the Settings menu.
In the Devices & Services page, click the Add Integration button in the bottom-right corner.
A pop-up will appear. Search for SMLIGHT in the search bar, and select the SMLIGHT Integration from the list of options.
Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your SMLIGHT Zigbee Coordinator (e.g., SLZB-06) to your Home Assistant instance. If Home Assistant has auto discovered the coordinator it will be shown in the list of discovered devices.
Once the SMLIGHT integration is successfully added, ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) will be configured automatically in the background.
In the Integrations page you will then see Zigbee Home Automation as an integration. Clicking on the integration will show you the connection to the new SMLIGHT coordinator.
After installation, you should see the SMLIGHT Coordinator listed as a device under Devices & Services. clicking on that will show the device added through that integration.
Step 3: Pairing a Zigbee Device Using the SMLIGHT Coordinator Page
After the SMLIGHT integration is set up, locate the SMLIGHT Coordinator device under the ZHA integration in the Integrations page.
Click on the Coordinator to access its device page.
On the device page, click the Add Devices via this device button to begin pairing a new Zigbee device.
Put your Zigbee device (e.g., Sonoff Water Valve in this example) into pairing mode. Typically, this is done by pressing and holding a button on the device until an LED indicator starts blinking.
Once in pairing mode, Home Assistant will automatically detect the device and display a notification when it's found.
You can now rename the device and assign it to a specific area of your home. Once satisfied, click Finish.
Step 4: Managing the Zigbee Device
After pairing the Sonoff Water Valve, it will appear as a device under the ZHA intergration.
From here, you can manage and control the device. Click on the Sonoff Water Valve to access its control options, including setting up automations or viewing the device status.
Conclusion
You have now successfully added the SMLIGHT integration to Home Assistant, automatically enabling the ZHA integration in the background. Additionally, you’ve learned how to pair Zigbee devices like the Sonoff Water Valve using the SMLIGHT Coordinator.
Feel free to add more Zigbee devices and customize their behavior through Home Assistant. If you need to refer back to the steps, the screenshots provided will be a helpful guide.
